When to call us for wall drying

If you notice any of these problems, call us before water has more time to spread into nearby materials.

The wall feels cool and slightly damp to the back of your hand

Evaporation from a wet surface pulls heat out of it, so a wet wall reads cooler than the wall beside it.

Paint is blistering or bubbling in a patch or a band

Moisture pushing outward from the cavity lifts the paint film away from the gypsum board. A horizontal band typically marks how high the water stood or wicked.

The baseboard has pulled away or the gap at the top has opened

Wet trim swells and then shrinks as it dries, which breaks the caulk line and rotates the board off the wall.

Nail pops or a visible line along the joint tape

Wet gypsum board loses its grip on fasteners and its bond at the seams. A row of nail pops or lifting joint tape means the board has been wet, not just splashed.

Wallpaper seams are lifting or the surface feels spongy

Vinyl wallpaper acts as a vapor retarder and traps moisture against the drywall. Walls with vinyl covering hide water longer and are among the worst to leave undried.

A bay by bay reading of the wall

A pinless moisture meter sweeps the surface to find the wet stud bays and their boundaries. We mark exactly which bays are involved instead of treating the whole wall as wet.

Verification before any bay is called wet

A thermal imaging camera shows temperature differences that follow the wet area, which speeds up finding the edges.

The entry route identified

We work out whether water came from above, from a pipe in the wall, from a window, from the floor upward or from the room on the other side.

  • How many stud bays are wet
    We mark and price the affected bays rather than the whole wall. Two wet bays in one room is a small job; a full wall in two rooms is not.

  • Wall covering and access
    Painted gypsum board with removable baseboard is straightforward. Tile, paneling, vinyl wallpaper, brick veneer and built in cabinetry all make getting air into the cavity more expensive.

  • Interior partition or exterior wall
    An uninsulated interior partition dries fastest and cheapest. An insulated exterior wall with wall sheathing on the outside face holds water longer and may need insulation removal.

  • How high the water reached
    Height drives how many days a wall needs, because more of the assembly has to release water.

  • Whether insulation has to come out
    Removing wet batt insulation and disposing of it is priced by area, and it brings a rebuild line with it.

  • Equipment count and days
    Cavity systems, air movers and dehumidification are billed per unit per day. Fewer wet bays means fewer machines and a shorter run.

Water may keep moving into nearby materials even when the surface looks dry.

A closed cavity has no way to dry itself

There is no airflow, no light and no drainage inside a stud bay. Left alone, a wet wall can hold moisture for weeks or months rather than days.

Paint over a damp wall fails twice

Fresh paint on a wet surface blisters and peels again within weeks. You pay for the same wall twice and still have the water.

Wet insulation keeps the bay humid after the framing surface reads dry

A soaked batt acts as a reservoir behind the board. That is why insulation gets a decision of its own rather than being dried in place.

Bottom plates and the trim above them go soft

Water settles at the base of a cavity, so the bottom plate stays wet longest.

Questions about wall drying

Do you have to cut open my wall to dry it?

Usually no, and that is the default answer. We take the baseboard off and drill small access holes below the trim line, then push dry air through the wet stud bays.

How can you tell my wall is wet without opening it?

A pinless moisture meter reads through the surface and finds the wet bays and their edges. A thermal imaging camera helps point at the area, and every reading gets compared against a dry wall in the same room.

How long does it take to dry a wall?

Most walls reach target in three to five days once air is moving through the cavity. Uninsulated interior partitions can finish sooner.

Does the insulation inside my wall have to come out?

It depends what is in there, and many interior partitions have no insulation at all. A batt that matted down or took dirty water comes out, and reaching it is typically the reason a low strip of drywall is removed on an exterior wall.

Can I just cut a hole and point a fan at it?

A fan in the room does almost nothing to the inside of a cavity, and airflow without dehumidification just moves the moisture to other rooms.

My wall is wet at the bottom only. Is that better or worse?

It is typically the more common and more manageable case, because water settles at the base of a cavity.

Can I paint over the damage once it is dry?

Yes, once the readings clear. Gypsum board wetted by clean water is routinely dried in place and painted.
